Buddhist Cultural Park
Lahaina Jodo Mission

BY BUCK QUAYLE

The Buddhist Cultural Park at the Lahaina Jodo Mission, situated near the ocean at the foot of Ala Moana St., attracts visitors from around the world. The 12-foot-high, 7,000-pound copper and bronze statue of the Amida Buddha (at the rear of the foto on top), cast in Kyoto, Japan, is the largest such statue outside of that country.

A new addition-a 13-tiered pagoda-has just been put in place on the grounds of the mission. The pagoda, standing some 20 feet high, was donated by Mrs. Matsue Tsubaki in memory of her late husband, Masakazu. Construction of the pagoda was handled by Nobumi Tokunaga, with the assistance of John Siemer of Pioneer Mill and mission members Sadamu Tsubaki, Minoru Nakamoto, Takeshi Hinahara, Kiichi Seino, Tsuyoshi Miyano, Harold Aotaki, Munekazu Ueno, Kiden Nishijima and Chirue Takahashi.
