West Maui Highway
Four more miles of the dirt road around the western tip of Maui are now being paved.
The four-mile section-from the Honokohau bridge to Poelua Gulch-should be open to traffic in about one month.
The road currently is closed to traffic, to permit uninterrupted work on the $349,000 project by Fong Construction of Kahului.
Completion of the new paved section will leave approximately 14 miles of dirt road between Poelua Gulch and the town of Waihee, near Wailuku, according to Hideo Hayashi of the State Highways Division.
This year's session of the state legislature voted a total of $625,000 over the next two years for further paving of the dirt portion.
